Renji Hospital, founded in 1844, is the first western-type hospital in Shanghai and one of the oldest in China as well.

The hospital, affiliated to Shanghai Jiao Tong University School of Medicine, is a comprehensive, upper first-class (aka Grade 3, Class A) hospital with enormous branches of clinical disciplines involved in not only diagnosis and treatment but also medical education and scientific research.

The hospital, possessing 2000 beds, has 50 clinical and technical departments. The hospital has 4 divisions and a cancer institute situated throughout the city of Shanghai. The hospital employs around 1000 physicians including 400 senior specialists, 1200 nurses, and 800 related health staff.  The hospital owns and utilizes advanced medical equipments, including MRI, MSCT, and PET-CT for testing, monitoring, and imaging diagnosis.

Renji Hospital served more than 3 million patients in 2013. The total number of outpatient and emergency patient visits reached 3.42 million. The total number of hospital admissions was 84,700. The total number of inpatient surgical procedures was 63,900.

In 2014, the hospital celebrated its 170 anniversary.
